The Imagined
by Stephen Dunn
If the imagined woman makes the real woman
seem bare-boned, hardly existent, lacking in
gracefullness and intellect and pulchritude,
and if you come to realize the imagined woman
can only satisfy your imagination, whereas
the real woman with all her limitations
can often make you feel good, how, in spite
of knowing this, does the imagined woman
keep getting into your bedroom, and joining you
at dinner, why is it that you always bring her along
on vacations when the real woman is shopping,
or figuring the best way to the museum?
And if the real woman
has an imagined man, as she must, someone
probably with her at this very moment, in fact
doing and saying everything she’s ever wanted,
would you want to know that she slips in
to her life every day from a secret doorway
she’s made for him, that he’s present even when
you’re eating your omelette at breakfast,
or do you prefer how she goes about the house
as she does, as if there were just the two of you?
Isn’t her silence, finally, loving? And yours
not entirely self-serving? Hasn’t the time come,
once again, not to talk about it?
I was going to ask a question…but I won’t. 🙂
I wish you would have. I wanted to chat with you last night, but your chat account had gone invincible again… (hehe)
Huh??? FB has been acting just a bit strange lately. I hardly ever get notifications of messages or comments, even though I haven’t changed anything. Oh well. It seems like I kind of accidentally find out there were messages there.
Do you chat any other way?
No… 🙂
After I read this I could not help but think of Howard Walowitz (Big Bang Theory) and his fantasy for Katee Sackoff (Battlestar Gallactica) and the bath scene where he moans, “All soaped up and nowhere to go”.
Sorry, I know this was a sort of serious post…but what can I do?
All said and done…real is better.
Does it really matter what a particular piece bring to mind? You are right, in that it was a serious post; but, I am not offended if you find humor there as well. In fact, if you go to the video, you’ll find that the reader actually finds this kind of situation quite scary.
To be honest, it echoes the sorts of feelings I am going through at the moment.
Take care, and may Fraud Bless!

And I forgot to say, I’ll be posting some rewrites of some children’s stories soon (not my own) that WILL be quite entertaining.. 😉
